Heavier rainfalls forecast in the region this summer
At least nine South Koreans have been killed, mostly by landslides due to heavy rains.
South Korea's National Emergency Management Agency said on Monday (July 11) nine people had been killed and one was missing during torrential rains between last Friday (July 8) and this Monday, and about 350 people were evacuated.
Seoul's Yonhap News agency said as much as 40 centimetres (16 inches) of rain had been fallen in southern parts of the country since last Friday, leaving tens of thousands of hectares of farmland submerged and about 150 homes flooded.
The emergency agency said landslides killed a 69-year-old woman with her two grandchildren in Miryang on Saturday (July 9), a 78-year-old man in Gunsan and a 78-year-old woman in Seocheon on Sunday (July 10), and 58-year-old husband and wife in Hadong on Monday.
It also said a 72-year-old woman disappeared in Miryang on Saturday and two women aged 91 and 86 respectively were killed when stonework at a cemetery collapsed in Boseong on Sunday July 10).
The state meteorological agency expected more torrential rains in the country's central and upper areas as the rain was moving northward. The agency had forecast South Korea this summer would see seasonal rainfalls heavier than usual.
