블레셋과 아라비아가 예루살렘을 침공했을 때
세일산 성채에서 안전하게 살았던 에돔 족속,
야곱의 쌍둥이 형 에서에서 벌어진 그들은
이스라엘 백성에게 아무런 관심조차 갖지 않았다.
1장 3절
너희는 자신의 교만에 스스로 속았으니
바위 성채에서 살고
높은 산 속에 거처를 이루었기 때문이다.
"누가 어디 여기까지 올라 올 수 있단 말인가?"
너희는 자랑스레 자문한다.
You have been deceived by your own pride
because you lived in a rock fortress
and make your home high in the mountains.
"Who can ever reach us way up here?"
you ask boastfully.

1장 11~12절
그들이 침략을 당했을 때
너희는 멀찌기 서서 그들 도우기를 거절했다.
이방인들이 그들 재산을 탈취하고
예루살렘을 나누어 가지려 제비를 뽑을 때
너희는 그들에게 적이 된 것처럼 굴었다.
먼 나라로 너희 친족들이 끌려 갈 때
너희는 흐뭇이 보기만 했었다.
유대 백성이 그처럼 재앙을 당할 때
너희는 그들을 거절했었다.
그처럼 두려운 그들 고통의 날에
너희 말이 거만했었다.
When they were invaded,
you stood aloof, refusing to help them.
Foreign invaders carried off their wealth
and cast lots to divide up Jerusalem,
but you acted like one of Israel's enemies.
You should not have gloated
when they exiled your relatives to distant lands.
You should not have rejoiced
when the people of Juda suffered such misfortune.
You should not have spoken arrogantly
in that terrible time of trouble.
